But, I Want That...

Have you ever walked into a store with many unimaginable snacks and zeroed in on something you really want, but shouldn't get? You are not alone. After visiting with family on Friday, we stopped into Bucee's to get a sweet treat. My nemesis was there staring at me and I was staring at it...

As any Texan will tell you, walking into Bucee's is like walking into a gold mine. I was looking for orange slices when I saw something that made me stare and drool... the cinnamon roll. It was covered in icing goodness and I wanted that!!! Their cinnamon rolls are huge and I couldn't take my eyes off of it. I realized a decision had to be made about whether this was worth the calories or not. So, an evaluation was in order.

We'll start with the good: It is going to taste great. I know that by looking at it. It will be an enjoyable five to ten minutes of devouring my desired delicacy. I haven't had one in over a year and it will make me, momentarily, very happy. It is staring at me and I am staring at it. We are at an impasse...

The bad... I didn't want to look, but I am sure the calories are off the charts. I will not be able to eat a little of that ginormous amount of deliciousness. It will take me a week to get the pounds gained removed (this is true of any heavy bread item eaten) and I will feel terrible after eating this. Even though it looks great, I usually get sluggish and moody after eating these foods... It is, still, staring at me and I am staring right back... What to do?

After weighing the odds, I walked away. I had already had my splurge meal of the week and eating that cinnamon roll would have set me back tremendously. I did not want to move backwards, after all of this hard work, for a momentary lapse in judgment. So, I got a package of gummi bears (they did not have my orange slices...) and ate a small handful of them. (These are easier to control my portions with). These have less calories as well. I enjoyed a sweet treat and didn't over indulge. Win Win!

The holidays are coming up and there is going to be a lot of staring contests and evaluations ahead. It is important to stay focused on your goals to make it through all the food festivities. Knowing how food affects your body and limiting yourself is key. We are all going to eat those foods that are not in our meal plans, but evaluating what you can do and how much you can eat of it, beforehand, will make the holidays better. The battle has begun!

1 Peter 5:8- "Be soberminded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour."

She literally got in the car self-talking down from the Bucee's junk food sugar rush. I didn't sharew with her how badly I, myself, wanted to eat a whole bag of beaver nuggets. Those things are dangerous.
